Online cloud solutions have become a hugely important part of protecting our data and are used by many business and individuals to replace traditional on-premise storage systems. Gone are the days of filing cabinets, hard drives and USB sticks, cloud storage is the much safer and easier way to back up your files.
But as these storage systems have grown in popularity more and more have begun to appear, making it harder for people to decide which systems to use. You probably know about some of the more popular ones like the iCloud or Google Drive, but with so many different features and prices, choosing the ideal solution for you might take some time.
And we’re here to help. Below, we’ve put together a list of our top six recommended cloud backup systems to help you make the most informed decision on which services to invest in.
iDrive cloud storage
iDrive is one of the best cloud solutions thanks to its affordable prices and great security. It offers continuous syncing and will retain up to 30 previous versions of the files you back up. Those that sometimes delete things without thinking will be pleased to know that anything deleted from their computer will not be immediately removed from the server, giving you more chance to restore it before it disappears for good.
Some of the other features include up to 5GB of data on the free version, though you can upgrade to a paid version for more storage, and there are also business versions specifically for those who need larger amounts of space. Perhaps one of the best features of this system is that if you lose your data, iDrive Express will send you a physical hard disk of all your information so you can restore this as quickly as possible.
There is also an additional facial recognition feature which helps you to organise your photos should you wish to use it.
If you want unlimited storage space and devices then Zoolz is the cloud solution for you. There is a free version of the platform but this of course doesn’t come with the unlimited features, if you want to upgrade the prices are also very affordable so you don’t have to break the bank.
Another reason why Zoolz is so great is that it has a really easy to use interface and comes with the option to combine the cloud operations with local storage. This platform is well-established unlike some of the newer cloud-based systems as it has been around for more than a decade, so you can feel safe in the knowledge that it is trustworthy and reliable.
And to top it all off, they offer a 30-day money-back guarantee if you’re not happy with the service – so what have you got to lose!
If you’re a big fan of Microsoft Office and you use it for almost everything, then this one is for you. Microsoft OneDrive integrates neatly with outlook.com which is perfect if you use their emailing service. Similarly, it comes with Microsoft 365 so you can use and edit files online without having to download them on to your computer.
There is a free option which offers 5GB of storage space, though this can be upgraded relatively easily and cheaply. On this platform, you can also link up to 30 devices and still share files with those who aren’t using OneDrive. There are a few different apps you can download to help facilitate working, sharing and backing up on the move.
Though it is a great cloud storage service, this is a relatively low-thrills solution where storage is the aim of the game. This means there aren’t many other advanced features.
If you use the G-Suite or you prefer to use android devices then Google Drive is the ideal cloud solution for you. There is a generous amount of free storage at 15GB, something which lots of other cloud services don’t offer and as always this can be upgraded if you need more. One of the key selling points for Google Drive is that you can store an unlimited amount of high-res photos and make use of Google’s version of the office suite.
What’s more, as with everything Google does, the cloud service is always evolving to offer new and exciting features which makes this a worthwhile investment. You can link your account to an unlimited number of devices which also makes this great for your business.
Another affordable solution, pCloud is one of the very few cloud services that offers a one-off fee (subscription). That is if you even need more storage as the free version offers 10GB. While some other platforms might put limits on the size of the files you can back up to your cloud, this one doesn’t. This means you can sync very large files if you need to.
That said, the platform advertises itself as a ‘personal cloud space’ so it might not be the ideal solution for larger businesses. However, it has a really user-friendly interface, a 30-day trash history in case you accidentally delete something you shouldn’t have and the service is available on all desktop and mobile devices.
Backblaze comes with a range of impressive features and no limits on capacity or bandwidth which is great news for businesses or those storing large amounts of data. It has been one of the favourites with consumers for years and much like the iDrive service the company will send you external discs and USBs if you lose your data. But better still, if you send these back within 30 days you’ll be given a full refund!
Though there is no option for different plans, this is an affordable solution at a flat yearly rate. As part of the plan, your cloud service includes an anti-theft feature for extra security. What this does is records the IP address of your computer when it connects so it can spot any strange activity or help to locate the device should it be stolen or hacked.
