In the last 5 years, the overall number of solar installations has exploded from around 40,000 to almost 110,000! We’re becoming a greener society, and the dropping prices of solar panels don’t hurt either.

Now that solar power systems are more accessible and affordable, you might be considering home solar panels. That way, you can do your part in looking after the planet.

How many solar panels do you need for your house though? Read on to find out!

How Many Solar Panels Do You Need?

On average, a home needs between 20 to 25 solar panels to completely cover its electricity needs. Otherwise, you can get away with fewer panels if you don’t want to go completely off-grid.

This is just a rough estimate though. You’ll need to speak to the best solar company around to narrow it down better.

In the meantime, here are some things to consider that’ll affect how many solar panels you’ll need.

How Much Electricity You Use

The electricity consumption of a household of 8 that’s always home will be significantly different from that of a household of 2 who are barely home, even if the houses are of the same size. So obviously, the more electricity you use, the more panels you’ll need.

Off-Grid vs Grid Intertied

As we’ve said above, if you want to go completely off the grid, then you might need 20 to 25 solar panels to cover your electricity usage.

However, you can choose to still partially depend on the grid (called an intertied system). In this case, you can get away with fewer panels because you’ll keep drawing power from the grid, just less of it.

Do note that with an intertied system, you can choose to get a battery when installing solar panels. This can be useful if you get lots of sunshine and generate more energy than needed. You can then store it away for a rainy day!

Your Location

If you’re located somewhere sunny, then more sunlight will reach your solar panels, meaning you’ll need a smaller amount. But if you’re in a location where there’s not so fantastic weather, you’ll need more panels to make up for that.

The Wattage of Your Solar Panels

Quality over quantity applies to solar ratings. If you opt for panels that have a higher power rating, they might be more expensive, but you won’t need as many of them. Whereas if the power rating is lower, you’ll need to purchase more panels to make up for the lack of power.

Now you know approximately how many solar panels you need for your home. Of course, the best idea is to get in touch with a solar company so they can go over your needs and what your property is like. From there, they can give you a better estimate of the number of residential solar panels you might require.
