Walk the boundary of a school and you’ll pass five different security problems in about fifteen minutes. Most school fencing specs treat them as one problem with one answer. The result is a site paying anti-climb prices along a hedge nobody has ever crossed, and a delivery gate held shut with a chain.
The road frontage
The road frontage carries the highest exposure on the site. It’s the boundary the public stands next to and the one that gets tested after dark. School security fences earn their price here more than anywhere else on the perimeter.
Anti-climb mesh belongs on this run. 358 mesh is the usual specification, and the name is its geometry: a 3 inch by 0.5 inch aperture in 8 gauge wire. The aperture is too small to get a finger into for a grip and too tight for standard bolt cutter jaws to seat. It also stays visually open. A school fence that blocks the view into the site kills the passing surveillance the street gives you.
Get the district standard and the local code before you price a height, and check whether there’s a sightline requirement at the vehicle entrance.
Vehicles are the frontage question people skip. If the road is fast and straight with a play area directly behind the fence, a mesh line is not a vehicle barrier, and that belongs in the site risk assessment rather than the fence schedule.
The playground edge
Fences for school playgrounds get judged on different criteria. Climb resistance drops down the list, because the people on this side are small children. What matters is gaps, trapped fingers, exposed wire ends and blind corners.
868 twin wire is the common answer, built from 8mm horizontal wires with a 6mm vertical wire between them. The panel is rigid and there are no toe holds along it. Inspect the junctions, not the panels. Panel to post, and the hinge side of every gate. Finger traps get built on site by an installer solving a level change, and they never appear on a drawing.
Supervision beats security here. Staff need an unbroken view across the play area, so keep the mesh visually open at adult eye height and keep planters and equipment stores off the fence line. A boundary a child can be hidden behind is worse than one a teenager could climb.
The playing field boundary
Fields are long, and cost per linear foot decides this boundary. It’s usually the longest run on the site, so a dollar per foot turns into a real number on the quote.
The exposure is low. There’s nothing on a grass field to steal and nothing behind it that justifies a forced entry rating. Specify the cheapest product that does the two jobs the boundary has: keeping balls in and keeping casual access out.
Ball containment is a height question before it’s a mesh question. Put the tall sections behind the goals and at the ends where balls actually go, then drop to standard height along the flanks. Extra height around the whole field spends serious money on the lowest risk boundary you own.
Leave a gate wide enough for the mower. If it doesn’t fit, someone will make an opening, and it’ll be permanent.
The service yard and delivery gate
The service yard is the weakest point on most school sites, and it’s weak operationally rather than structurally. Deliveries arrive during the school day. Somebody props the gate at 7am for the kitchen order and it’s still open at 3pm.
School security gates are where these specs come apart. A run of 358 mesh with a chain link gate in the middle of it is a chain link perimeter. Match security fence gates to the fence either side. If the fence carries a rating, ask for a gate certified on the same scale. LPS 1175 Issue 8 uses a letter for the toolkit and a number for the delay in minutes. B3 means three minutes of tool contact against bolt cutters, hammers, drills and crowbars, and the test lets those three minutes fall anywhere inside a fifteen minute window. B3 is what used to be called SR2.
Make the gate close itself. A self closing swing leaf, or a sliding gate on a timer, takes the human decision out of the loop. Keep the delivery route clear of any path children use.
Check the pedestrian door into the yard too. A yard secured on the vehicle gate and open on a side door is an open yard.
The main entrance
The main entrance does two jobs that pull against each other. It controls who gets onto the site, and it has to look like the front of a school rather than the back of a warehouse.
Split pedestrians from vehicles. A single shared opening means the vehicle gate stands open through every drop off and pickup, which hands you an uncontrolled entrance twice a day. A separate pedestrian gate, released from the office, keeps the vehicle leaf shut unless a vehicle is moving.
Route every visitor past a staffed window. Give the entrance one controlled way in on foot with a clear sightline from reception to that gate, and keep everything else exit only with no external handle.
Appearance is a legitimate line here. The entrance is a short run, so a railing or a different panel style costs very little across thirty feet, and it’s the stretch that ends up in the photo on the school’s website. Where the budget actually needs to go
Spreading the money evenly around the perimeter is the most common way a school overspends and stays exposed. Fencing for schools gets priced per foot, so an even spec hands most of the budget to the longest and lowest risk run.
Invert it. Rank the boundaries by what sits behind them and how exposed they are, then let run length do the arithmetic. The road frontage and the service yard are short, so upgrading them barely moves the total. The field boundary is long, so downgrading it releases real money. Same budget, redistributed, and the weak point closes.
Price the gates separately. Gates carry cost that a per foot rate hides, and they’re the part of the perimeter that has to work every day.
Before anyone quotes a product, walk the perimeter with the site manager and photograph every stretch. Note what sits behind each one and who uses it at what time of day, then write the spec against that list instead of a product name. You’ll finish with three or four systems instead of one, a bill of quantities that takes longer to price, and a delivery gate that closes itself.
